Live Action News reports that the Ohio Senate voted 23-10 to defund Planned Parenthood to the tune of $1.3 million in taxpayer money.
Senate Bill 214 would bar Planned Parenthood or any other organization that preforms elective abortions from certain grant money and disallow taxpayer funded entities from contracting with Planned Parenthood for services. Instead it would redirect money to Federally Qualified Health Centers or other community clinics that are not involved with abortion. In Ohio Such health providers outnumber Planned Parenthood locations ten-to-one.
The majority Republican Ohio House of Representatives is also expected to pass the measure making Ohio the seventh state to defund Planned Parenthood.
Casey Mattox, Senior Counsel for “Alliance Defending Freedom,” who testified in support of the bill said:
As the U.S. Supreme Court has said, state governments have a real interest in preserving and promoting the health and safety of babies before they are born. States have authority to enact laws and policies that encourage childbirth over abortion, including withholding taxpayer subsidies. In fact, states aren’t required to commit any resources to facilitating abortion.
